When it comes to important things in life, telco speed is one of them. Nobody wants to wait for a download to take ages. We live in an era where everything is now or never. We take a look at four telcos, namely Maxis, Celcom, DiGi and U Mobile on how they fare in speed at different locations. In the central region, we did tests in KLCC followed by Ampang in the east, Batu Caves in the north, Kajang in the south and Petaling Jaya in the west. To get a clearer picture, we also interviewed users in those areas to find out which telco they use and how do they find their current telco.
KLCC
In KLCC, using Ookla’s speedtest, Maxis’ download speed was 4.74Mbps while Celcom fared at 2.12Mbps, DiGi at 0.04Mbps and U Mobile at 1.29Mbps. The reason why DiGi was not doing well was probably because the service had a disruption on that day itself. One of the people we met in KLCC shared how he likes Maxis.
Ampang
The next stop was Ampang Point in the east where the speed test showed Maxis clocking at 9.25Mbps for download speed, Celcom at 14.8Mbps, DiGi running on 0.04Mbps and U Mobile at 2.58Mbps. As noted previously, DiGi had some downtime so we couldn’t run accurate tests for the telco.
Sofi who lives in Ampang uses U Mobile but she is not happy with her current telco. According to her the telco suffers downtime frequently.
Batu Caves
Next, we headed to Batu Caves in the north to find out about the speed of telcos in the area. Celcom clocked a 1.04Mbps download speed while DiGi had issues again with its speed of 0.04Mbps followed by U Mobile doing well with 16.7Mbps and Maxis at 2.79Mbps.
Maya from Selayang uses Celcom and she likes the service. Before this she was using Maxis but she realised that the package was better at Celcom so she switched telcos in 2008. She has been a happy Celcom user ever since.
Kajang
Towards the south in Kajang we tested the speed of all four telcos at the Stadium Kajang MRT station right where the famous satay restaurant is. In Kajang the speed test showed 67.9Mbps for Maxis, 2.28Mbps for Celcom, 0.03Mbps for DiGi and 7.05Mbps for U Mobile.
Chris from Kajang is also a user of Maxis who is satisfied with the telco. The telco does very well in terms of speed compared to the other telcos.
Petaling Jaya
In Petaling Jaya, the telco that beats them all is Maxis at 28.5Mbps followed by U Mobile at 24Mbps and DiGi 0.02Mbps. Surprisingly, Celcom didn’t fare too well at 0.05Mbps. We managed to get two users to share their experience.
Daniel and Samantha are also both users of Maxis and they are happy with their telco.
In conclusion to these tests, we find that Celcom and Maxis performed better while DiGi does not live up to standards. U Mobile is average but it has room for improvement. Out of the six people we interviewed, four of them are Maxis users.
