Who knew that we’ve never actually seen a blackhole. You would think that out of the mass amounts of portrayals of them in movies, games, and all sorts of images. In reality we’ve never witnessed the magnitude and intensity of a blackhole. UNTIL NOW!
Astronomers have released the first ever picture of a blackhole, and while immensely impressive, it’s blurry AF. I mean, I’m not quite sure what I expected, but I’m pretty sure this ain’t it. Regardless, it’s pretty cool, and maybe from this we’ll learn even more about blackholes and the universe as a whole. The blackhole pictured, is actually in a galaxy far far away *Cue Star Wars Theme*.
The blackhole actually measures 40 billion km across, which is three million times the size of the Earth. Safe to say, the description of “monster” is pretty apt when talking about the sheer size of the hole. It’s actually 500 million trillion km away, and needed 8 telescopes from around the world to create basically a ‘megascope’ to capture the image. While it is pretty blurry, it doesn’t change the fact that this is something major for Astronomers, and will lead the way for further studies.
But am I the only one thinking what it would be like to get sucked into a blackhole? According to Einstein, I’d never be able to come back, but the mind wants what the mind wants, you know?
