Chinese megacorporation Tencent is refreshing its flagship games platform.
The new service, dubbed “WeGame,” will support international users and could very viably be a Steam competitor.
According to the landing page that reveals a countdown timer to the reveal, the platform will allow direct communication between developers and users; providing a one-stop shop for information, purchase, downloads, support, streaming and community. Gamers will have the ability to rate and the platform will be localised for community interaction, giving a more stable service.
At current moment, Tencent’s flagship games platform is called – well, Tencent Games Platform, or TGP. According to Polygon, TGP already has some 200 million users, compared to Steam which at last count had more than 125 million.
Tencent owns Riot Games (League of Legends) and Supercell (Clash of Clans). It has a piece of Glu Mobile, makers of Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. It even has a minority stake in both Epic Games and Activision Blizzard. So it looks like they are investing quite a bit in the gaming segment – one market research firm estimates that Tencent controls 13 percent of the entire games market.
The current TGP platform, which a counter says has been downloaded nearly 4.5 billion times already, is here. WeGame is set to launch in 2 days.
