A new chapter in mobile payments has arrived in Malaysia. Samsung Pay is now officially available in Malaysia, with several leaders in the banking sector joining the payment system locally. Banks such as Maybank (which started the beta service recently), CIMB, Standard Charted and Citibank now allows its customers to enroll their payment cards to the Samsung Pay application in supported smartphones.

“Samsung Pay is a robust mobile payment platform that not only supports the shift towards digital wallets today but provides a conducive and future-proof avenue for secure e-payments in Malaysia,” Said Lee Jui Sang, Vice President of the Mobile and IT Business Unit, Samsung Malaysia Electronics. “As Samsung has done with other markets, we have taken a customized approach to our launch in Malaysia – collaborating with key partners to turn swift and secure mobile payments into reality for out users. We are proud to call leading financial institutions and merchants our partners and to introduce Samsung pay as the most widely accepted mobile payment service in Malaysia. We are working tirelessly to ensure that Samsung Pay is here to stay and this includes our future plans of boosting the service through loyalty programmes.”

At the launch, Elle Kim, the Vice President of Payment Business Group, Samsung Electronics shared that Malaysia is the 11th market for Samsung Pay and it continues the company’s push to have more users around the region adopt mobile payment services as part of daily lives by having tailored content and offers for customers locally. This is possible in Malaysia as Samsung has managed to engage with merchants, financial institutions as well as the government to ensure the services is well accepted across the nation. So far, over 90% of merchants that includes F&B outlets, fashion and lifestyle retailers, as well as supermarket and department stores across Malaysia are Samsung Pay ready.

When asked, Elle said that the system is easy and secure to use thanks to the Samsung Knox that ensures details are kept safe from prying eyes during transaction. She also said that thanks to the MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) technology built into supported devices, users do not even need to bring their cards around to shop – even when they are abroad in Samsung Pay enabled countries.

As of press time, the following banks have their cards supported by Samsung Pay in Malaysia:

Maybank (Visa Credit, Debit and Prepaid cards)
CIMB (Mastercard Credit cards)
Citibank (Mastercard and Visa Credit cards)
Standard Charted (Mastercard Credit Cards)

More banks will be enrolling in the Samsung Pay system in the coming months, as well as other loyalty card services. Users can download the Samsung Pay app from the Samsung App Store for their Samsung Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, Note 5, A5 2017 and A7 2017 models right now.
