Symantec had announced of the latest malware threats that are on the rise targeting Blizzard’s online gamers.
In a Symantec blog post, Lionel Payet stated: “Hearthstone, a free-to-play card game based on World of Warcraft, has been indirectly targeted by malware authors. These attackers have created third-party programs that supposedly benefit Hearthstone players, but in reality can compromise their computers with malicious software.”
So how does players get targeted by these hackers? Some of the Hearthstone players, who can’t obtain special coins or gift, tend to search online for a third-party tool that is said to boost players’ rewards. The tool used is considered as cheating because players will gain the upper hand in the game.
The creator of the game however, does not approve of these services. Most third-party tools contain malicious malware and players are at risk of having their personal information, as well as Bitcoins, stolen from them.
Symantec laid emphasis on protection, as it advised players to update their security software with the latest patches and avoid using third-party tools, as they could carry harmful malware.
