During Sony’s Corporate Strategy Meeting, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO John Kodera suggests that the PlayStation 4 (PS4) is in its final phase.
While this may sound like gloomy news, remember that the PS4 is now approaching five years old. The console launched in November 2013, so it makes sense for the console to be entering its final phase.
The company still expects the PS4 to perform well with exclusives like The Last of Us: Part II and Spider-Man on the horizon.
On a different note, Sony’s PSN reaches up to 80 million subscribers from its 70 million last year. Sony says it looks to add more PS Plus subscribers in the future to increase its revenue. It also expresses desire to create more first-party exclusives and harness growth in add-on content.
Kodera also says during the meeting that the March 2021 period would be a time when PlayStation will “crouch down once” to stand taller in the future. While a vague statement, this could hint at a possible PlayStation 5 console soon. Even so, PlayStation executive Shawn Layden confirms that Sony’s E3 2018 briefing will not have any hardware announcements.
