Singapore has now reported 1,426 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, April 20. This brings the national total in Singapore to 8,014 cases.

This is a new daily high for Singapore, as just two days ago, they had recorded 942 new cases. These new cases and surge in infection can be attributed to Singapore’s 323,000 migrant workers.

The latest challenge for Singapore is how to respond to this with many of these workers living in cramped conditions. As of Friday, migrant workers accounted for 65 percent of all cases in Singapore.

The “vast majority” of the new cases are work permit holders residing in foreign worker dormitories, Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) said in a media release of preliminary figures.

Of the 1,426 new cases, 16 of them were Singaporeans, or permanent residents.

“We are still working through the details of the cases, and further updates will be shared via the MOH press release that will be issued tonight,” said the ministry.
