Autonomous cars from Volvo will be hitting the roads faster than we earlier thought, Volvo Cars and Autolive together with Nvidia teamed up to develop and self-driving cars and the target is now 2021.

The three companies will work together along with Zenuity — a newly formed automotive software development — to develop next-generation self-driving car technologies. Production vehicles is scheduled to be on sale at a showroom in 4 years time.

“We are building on our earlier collaboration with Volvo to create production vehicles that will make driving safer, lead to greener cities and reduce congestion on our roads.” said Jensen Huang, founder of Nvidia. The graphic software company will be involved, extending its AI car computing platform as the foundation for their own advanced software development in the cars.

Jan Carlson, chief executive of Autoliv, said: “With NVIDIA, we now have full access to the leading AI computing platform for autonomous driving. Autoliv, Volvo Cars and NVIDIA share the same vision for safe, autonomous driving. Using the Nvidia Drive PX, the self driving cars system is able to comprehend full 360-degree, real-time situational awareness and can then use any high-definition map to plan a safe route and drive precisely along it, constantly adjusting to ever-changing circumstances. In addition the system also performs other critical functions, such as stitching camera inputs to create a complete surround-view of the car’s environment.
