With the success of Snapchat’s disappearing message feature, it was only a matter of time before other app started offering the same service to its consumers. Speaking of which, Telegram now has the same feature of erasing the photos and videos from one-on-one chats.

True to its name, Telegram was the first messaging app to offer end-to-end encryption that has a “secret chat” function, allowing self-destructing messages in chats designated to be private.

The secret chats on Telegram are only hosted on the sender’s and receiver’s devices and will not even leave breadcrumbs on the Telegram’s cloud. This makes it very different from regular messaging services (even those with end-to-end encryption) can be synced across devices.

Now, Telegram’s new feature will allow the regular chats to self-destruct as well. All you have to do is set a timer and your selected photos and videos will disappear. However, the self-destructing feature might not get on the Telegram’s authorities’ good side. In fact, the feature has already caused some problems in several countries due to its hard encryption.

For instance, Indonesia has officially blocked access to Telegram on the web, saying that it was being used to spread “radical and terrorist propaganda”. Due to this, Telegram later added that it would put together a team of moderators to screen and remove any “terrorist-related content” accordingly.
