Samsung might be working on a voice assistant powered speaker, not unlike Apple HomePod or Google Home.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the South Korean tech giant is working on a project codenamed Vega, featuring its new voice assistant Bixby in a smart speaker. Not much details are known about the device, with features and specifications noted as yet to be decided. No word on any potential release date either.
Vega’s project development is reportedly slowed by the progress of Bixby. With much issues revolving Samsung’s latest voice assistant, it’s speculated that Samsung will need to pour more into the development of the voice assistant before making any tangible moves on other hardware.
When Bixby first launched along with the Galaxy S8, Samsung had to ship it without voice control. Soon after, only Korean voice input was supported and it wasn’t until recently that a beta release for English made it to certain phones. WSJ reported that full release of Bixby voice support is “unlikely before the second half of July.”
