Hundreds of thousands of mobile phones end up in landfills every year, they cause serious pollution problems due to the composition of materials used in making this devices. While the manufacturers are trying to alleviate the damage by using less harmful materials in making them but the sheer volume including packaging and accessories, means more rubbish to clear. Samsung the largest mobile phone maker in the world is taking positive steps in reducing its carbon footprint on the planet, the company is working on steps to replace plastic packaging materials with paper and other environmentally sustainable elements by this year.

If you own a Samsung smartphone you would have possibly seen the plastic use from the wrapper around the box to the individually packed items inside the box. By cutting or removing them entirely will see a significant change in getting this toxic, non-biodegradeble material make their way into the lands or seas. The company has set the target for the first half of this year to replace packaging used for products and accessories – ranging from mobile phones and tablets to home appliances – will be substituted with environmentally sustainable materials like recycled/bio-based plastics and paper.

A special task force involving design and development, purchasing, marketing and quality control got together to come up with innovative packaging ideas. For mobile phone, tablet and wearable products, Samsung will replace the plastic used for holder got trays with pulp molds, and bags wrapping accessories with eco-friendly materials. Samsung will also alter the phone charger design, swapping the glossy exterior with a matte finish and eliminating plastic protection films, reducing the use of plastics.

Only certified fiber materials that are recognised by global environmental organizations will be used, by 2030, Samsung aims to use 500 thousand tons of recycled plastics and collect 7.5 million tons of discarded products.
