Samsung Malaysia Electronics has unveiled the winners of the Solve for Tomorrow 2020 competition which was held on October 9th for Form 1 and Form 2 students.
Team A.I.R. from SMK Seksyen 10 Kota Damansara brings home the first prize for their approach in addressing Malaysia’s key challenges on environmental issues. The first and second runner up were team EUNOIA from SMK (P) Sri Aman, and team STEM SRI U from SMK Sri Utama respectively.
The 3 finalists lobbied their ideas through a virtual presentation to a panel of judges on December 16. They create solutions involving both environmental and social themes which portray their capability to embrace Science, Technology, Engineering and Math methods to be both imaginative and spirited.
The first prize is won by Team A.I.R. took form in Samsung products up to RM16,900 for the school and each student gets products worth of RM7,000. The 2nd and the 3rd prize both get Samsung products of RM 13,500 and RM10,000 for schools and the students will get products up to RM6,000 and RM5,400 respectively.
The teams were tested based on the feasibility of the idea and authenticity of the solution as well as the application of STEM knowledge and the efficacy of their presentations based on the theme selected.
The panel of judges comprises Roh Jae Yeol, Director of Corporate Affairs, Samsung Malaysia Electronics; Ir. Dr. Mas Sahidayana Mohktar, Head of Universiti Malaya STEM Centre; Professor Dr. Rofina Yasmin Binti Othman, Associate Vice Chancellor (Industry & Community Networks), Universiti Malaya; and Professor Dr. Mohamed Shariff Mohamed Din FASc, Special Interest Group Biodiversity Akademi Sains Malaysia.
Supported by Universiti Malaya STEM Centre, the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow 2020 Competition intended to stimulate curiosity and inspire students to use STEM methods in addressing Malaysia’s key challenges.
This competition also enlightens innovative thinking, creative problem solving and teamwork. Four themes were given to the participants; health, education, environmental and social issues.
“We are impressed with the out-of-box innovative thinking demonstrated by the participants. These remarkable young students have developed tangible solutions to problems faced by our communities.
Through the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition, it is our aim to provide today’s youth with an avenue to imagine and pursue a career in STEM,” said Roh Jae Yeol, the Director of Corporate Affairs of Samsung Malaysia Electronics.
