Rumours: Uber Agrees to Sale Terms with Grab; Might Exit Southeast Asia

While rumours and speculations have been circling on one particular topic in the ride-hailing industry, the end is near; according to Bloomberg, the latest insider confirms that Uber agrees to sale terms with Grab.

Keep in mind, this is the same newsportal, the other being CNBC, that keeps fueling this specific rumour-mill. The rumours will stop once and for all in the next 24 hours if what Bloomberg reports is true.

Uber Technologies Inc. has reached an agreement to sell its Southeast Asian ride-hailing business to rival Grab. It could announce the deal as early as Monday morning in Singapore, people familiar with the matter said. – Bloomberg

Bloomberg inside sources have also revealed the sale terms. Primarily, Uber will sell its entire Southeast Asia operations to Grab and will include Uber Eats. In return, Uber gets a 25% to 30% stake in the new combined business.

If true, this will see Uber exiting Southeast Asia completely and leaving the ring to Grab and Go-Jek. This plays well for Softbank Group as it is a major investor for Uber and Grab; meaning the move to merge makes perfect sense for the large Japanese innovation magnate.

After all, it did initiate the sale of Uber China to Didi Chuxing.

This move will certainly bolster Uber’s listing efforts as this latest sale would contribute to stopping further revenue bleeding.

It’s odd that this rumour is now making a resurgence. After all, Uber just opened its brand-new Greenlight Hub to serve the Klang Valley. It even move to expand Uber Eats Malaysia to cover Petaling Jaya. These are form of assurances that there is no talks of a sale; this is especially true after it spent a fair bit to build the new command centre for its drivers.

The conclusion to this rumour will make itself known tomorrow if Uber and Grab puts out a statement on this matter. At press time, both ride-hailing rivals have not responded to any request for comment
