RM6999 Porsche Design Mate 9 An Overrated White Elephant

IF you ever thought Huawei will be reluctant to ship over its Porsche Design Mate 9 thinking Malaysians will be overwhelmed with the price, well do not be. Like Magpie’s fancying everything shiny and glittery, the more limited or unique an item is, the quicker they get sold over here.

So it comes as no surprise if within the next month or so, we will receive a statement from Huawei announcing the sell-out of the RM6999 smartphone incidentally going into my Guinness World Record Book for being the most expensive unimpressive 5.5″ phone made. Designing after luxury car brands and having the insignia slapped over is not going to entice me, BlackBerry went this way and had only the Arabs dropping their Dinars for the awkward looking device. Acer had Ferrari and we all can attest to the failed attempt by Asus with Lamborghini, what’s with the hardware makers and their fetish with sport cars? Doesn’t history make for lessons to be learned, apparently not for Huawei.

But I digress, the Chinese telecommunication giant is going ahead with the import and will make the device available with pre-orders starting 15th December on 11street and Vmall.my and in retail from 22nd. Credit should be given to the third largest phone company with their bold push in styling the Mate 9, giving customers a glimpse whats to come from Shenzen.

For the price tag, apart from outer shell resembling a black smartphone, (yup that’s it) in place of a flat six- 3.8 litre, 500hp engine you get Kirin 960 chipset, equally as impressive and extremely reliable, performance driven powertrain. Another German association found in the phone, is the implant of a 12 megapixel Leica Dual Lens camera.

Being totally practical here, for 3 gran less I could get the Mate 9 which is an amazing phone by the way and spend RM200 for a nice black shiny cover and still have spare to buy a diamond ring. Just sayin!
