By partnering up with Leia Inc. that specialises in making holographic displays for mobile devices, RED’s Hydrogen Android phone is said to feature special eye-pooping screens. The first-of-its-kind ‘holographic display will be able to seamlessly switch between traditional 2D and 3D content as well as interactive games, to its magnetic connectors for attaching accessories.
According to the press release, Leia leverages the breakthroughs of Nano-Photonic design and manufacturing. This will provide a complete lightfield holographic display solution for mobile devices through proprietary hardware and software.
While the end result of the holographic content has is still on the down low, YouTuber Marques Brownlee, who got a sneak peek of the Hydrogen phone’s screen says that it was impressive.
From Leia Inc.’s website, its holographic technology uses a ‘proprietary Diffractive Lightfield Backlighting solution’ that illuminates a standard LCD screen. So, when special holographic (H4V) content is displayed, it looks as if it’s popping out of the display.
Furthermore, the Hydrogen phone not only garnered the interest of phone enthusiast, but from filmmakers as well. Undoubtedly, the phone tank-like design shows that it’s not the average smartphone. One of the company’s patents suggests it could be cooking up some serious modules that augment the built in cameras. Who knows, the phone might even be featured in one of those futuristic-looking blockbuster movies.
Currently, the pricing of the phone starts at US$1,200 for the aluminium model and US$1,600 for the titanium.
