Police To Bring Those Who Violate The MCO Straight To Court Where They Face 2 Years In Jail; Still Want To Go Out?

As we enter the fourth week of the governments Movement Control Order (MCO), it seems that some people are still unable to grasp the whole concept of it. While it’s understandable to be frustrated as this was originally supposed to be a two week thing, it’s the only way we’re going to flatten that curve and beat the virus. Most people have been eager to do their part, but some are STILL flouting MCO rules.

The police have had just about enough of this nonsense and with the growing consensus being that the RM1000 compound is insufficient to deter people from leaving their house, it looks like they’ve resorted to just hauling MCO flouters straight to court.

In a press conference live from Putrajaya, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that the police will now be focusing less on issuing compounds and will instead book them to be be brought straight to court.

“We see that the rakyat are acting as if they don’t care or are not afraid of the laws we have today. Maybe RM1,000 is not seen as too high to scare them, those of whom are still continuously violating the MCO.

“So we agreed that the police, beginning tomorrow, won’t focus on compounds. Beginning tomorrow, those who are caught will be remanded and brought straight to court.

“Let the court decide, because based on Section 24 of Act 342, the court can punish them not more than two years imprisonment and for a subsequent offence, five years imprisonment,” he said.
It’ll be interesting to see if the possibility of spending two years in jail is enough to deter people from leaving their houses unnecessarily. Common sense would say yes but then again, some people just don’t seem to have even that.
