In less than a year after its arrival into Steam Early Access, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) makes US$712 million in total revenue. What makes this figure all the more significant is that PUBG sales account for about 12% of all revenue on the PC gaming platform in 2017.
Aside from breaking the bank, PUBG also set a Steam record with having the most concurrent players at one time with 1.3 million players. PUBG also sold over 30 million copies, which makes its total revenue for 2017 all the more believable.
All this is according to analytical firm, SuperData who published its 2017 year-in-review report, which focuses on industry spending in various sectors in gaming.
To give you an idea of how much the hype of PUBG has caused, it also overtook games like Overwatch and Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) in sales. Overwatch made US$382 million in sales while CS:GO made US$341 million.
Games like Destiny 2 and GTA Online have also been largely successful, raking in US$218 million and US$118 million respectively. While Destiny 2 is still somewhat considered a new game, GTA Online has been around for ages. This is due to the relevance and success Rockstar Games has created for the GTA Online community with consistent updates to its online game.
