Petronas ‘Rubber Boy’ CNY Ad Tops YouTube Charts

Post Yasmin, Petronas has maintained the emotionally charged theme for all its festive commercials started by the late creative director from Leo Burnett. This year the legacy of the genius director continues with the commission by the Malaysian oil and gas government linked company to produce a Chinese New Year ad that is bound to become another award winner.

‘Rubber Boy’ tells a story of a school going boy and his rubber-tapper mother who works tirelessly to make ends met for the poor family. The story line, shares the common sacrifice families in this young nation went through in their effort to have their hopeful young’s to succeed in the future.

In the mix after the video went on air, there was also this controversy over the origins of the story line #rubberboy which a legal dispute ensued with Leo Burnett Malaysia and an individual who claimed the story belonged to her. The incident went social recently went the individual posted comments between her and the advertising agency over the rights, this could also contributed to the interest to the video and sent it higher on the most viewed list on YouTube.

For those who have yet to watch the video, here it is. Advice: have a box of tissue next to you or a bulb of onion to camouflage the pipe leaks.

Apart from the the top listed commercial, Google Malaysia released its top ten YouTube Ads leaderboard for the months of January-June 2016 for Malaysia. All this will lead to a first ever YouTube Week in December 6-8 and also the hosting of YouTube Malaysia Ads Awards 2016, where the video streaming site will award the top ads of the year across 10 categories. .
