No More Need For Cables; Malaysian Company Developing Long-Range Wireless Charger

Let’s be honest, life would be so much easier if we can all charge our smartphones wirelessly because sometimes we need to use our phones without the trouble of them being connected to a charging cable.

That’s where wireless charing or Qi wireless charing comes in. Qi is an open interface that is used for wireless power transfer via inductive charging that was developed by the Wireless Power Consortium.

But so far, there hasn’t been a local product that explores this technology until recently. A Malaysian company called Enhance Track Sdn. Bhd. is now developing its own long-range wireless charger and working to build products based on the technology. Finally, one to call our own!

This was recently revealed by NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB), a Ministry of Science , Technology and Innovation business company that overlooks nanotechnology commercialisation and industrialisation in Malaysia. Enhance Track is one of NMB ‘s partners, and the company is developing the long-range wireless charging technology under the National Graphene Action Plan.

The RF-based long-range wireless charging tech is said to be the first of its kind in Malaysia, is called Malaysian Energy Transmission Technology (METT). NMB also revealed that Enhance Track has already constructed a working prototype as a phone charger.

When can we expect the product? As of right now there is official announcement on release date as the product is still in development but NMB representative said that the product is expected to be available on the market around mid-2021. So it’s going to take a while.

How much would it cost? The price of the METT charger transmitter is likely to cost between RM 1000 and RM 2000 while the receiver ‘s estimated price tag is around RM 300 to RM 500.

Though long-range wireless charging has been around for a quite a while now, for some reason, it has not been considered mainstream as not many people own these devices. But I am happy to hear that a Malaysian company is developing their own wireless charging product and maybe in the future, everyone is able to afford them.

Looking forward to the end results next year.
