After many speculation on exactly how popular the Switch is, Nintendo finally revealed figures along with their financial report.

According to their report, the console that was launched in 3rd March is “off to a promising start”, selling 2.74 million units.

The popular Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that launched around the same time saw sales of 2.76 million units – higher than the 2 million they expected. The Wii U version sold 1.08 million units, making the total sales of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild coming up to 3.84 million copies. The games that were released on Switch by Nintendo collectively sold 5.46 million units.

For comparison sake, the Wii sold 3.19 million units during launch month. Although, the figures might not be representative of the popularity. Nintendo has always kept their expectation modest, often constraining supply. While demand is high, if we just looked at launch numbers, the failure of Wii U looks about the same.

Although, looks like Nintendo is quite optimistic, forecasting sales of 10 million units for the current financial year, meaning it expects to have sold almost 13 million total by April. Wii sold over 20 million units within the same time frame.

In other figures, Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, which released worldwide in November recorded sales of 15.44 million units, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS sold 2.34 million units and Kirby: Planet Robobot sold 1.36 million units.

The worldwide sales volume for the Nintendo 3DS hardware this period was 7.27 million units, a 7% increase on a year-on-year basis, while the Nintendo 3DS software sales volume reached 55.08 million units, a 14% increase on a year-on-year basis.

On a side note, Wii U is pretty much on its way out, with the company noting that “Wii U hardware and software sales volume during this period decreased greatly when compared to the same period of the previous fiscal year.”
