The Switch has been a great success for Nintendo. Following a disappointing performance with the Wii U, many were anxious as to whether the home and portable console hybrid would capture the hearts of fans worldwide. Now, it looks like the Switch may even surpass Sony’s console sales next year.

A report from Strategy Analytics reveals that the Nintendo Switch will sell 17.3 million units in 2019. This will beat Sony’s PlayStation 4 sales of 17.1 million by a small margin. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Xbox One sales will sit in third place, at 10 million sales.

Currently, Sony is the leader in the video game console industry, with nearly half of its console comprising the market. 84% of these are PS4 or PS4 Pro devices.

Furthermore, it looks like the global retail value of the games console business is expected to improve to a total of $15.4bn in 2018, an increase of 7.6%.

 “Contrary to some expectations, the global TV games console market remains healthy. Many pundits have written it off over the years, for reasons ranging from the emergence of cloud gaming to the dominance of mobile devices and the arrival of VR, but it refuses to die. In fact, there is an argument that the enduring appeal of the TV games console, now in its sixth decade, continues to demonstrate the weaknesses and limitations of alternative games platforms,” said David Watkins, Director at Strategy Analytics.

Nintendo is currently ramping up to launch Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which has already set records for the Switch and franchise. Earlier in the month, the company released Pokemon Let’s Go, which has become the fastest-selling game on the platform. With Nintendo ending the year strong, the future for its miniature console looks bright.
