After the announcement made by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on May 1 where businesses in both the public and private sectors were allowed to operate on May 4, there’s been a lot of talk on social media. This new conditional movement control order (CMCO) has been very hotly debated on the internet. There are those who agree with the thinking of the government, but also those who think it is too early to open up the economy.
Now, there’s an online petition that has been made which urges the government to continue the movement control order (MCO), and at the time of writing, has almost 500,000 signatures. The actual number, as of now, is 472,563, and is continuing to rise as we speak.
The petition points out these reasons for cancelling the CMCO:
- We urge the Malaysian government to continue the MCO and cancel the conditional CMCO immediately.
- We do not want to follow the mistakes of other countries of loosening/cancelling their movement control order too early.
- We don’t want our front liners to be tired anymore.
- We do not want the government to be subject to capitalists who care only about their health without regard to the health and welfare of their workers.
- We can continue the MCO for the future of our country.

As per my understanding of these petitions though, nothing ever really changes besides it being a platform for people to voice their concerns. But over 450,000 people signing this petition is a look at the general landscape of what the people really feel. Whether the government listens to the people, is another question all together.
