The original AirPods was announced nearly two years ago and Apple did not turn their heads back to it for a revision. Now, words have been spreading about the next generation AirPods which may debut in 2019.
Apple did not announce any official statements on the AirPods 2. However, the company submitted a new trademark and Bluetooth SIG filings in Europe and Hong Kong. In addition to being a regular wireless earphones, the trademark filings indicate that the new AirPods will be a health and fitness capable device.
Another interesting information from the rumoured AirPods 2 is that the Bluetooth SIG Certification for Bluetooth 5.0 is cleared. The Bluetooth connectivity is an upgrade over the existing Bluetooth 4.2 in the original AirPods. With Bluetooth 5.0, we can expect the upcoming AirPods to have a longer battery life and cover a wider range.
All there is now is for Apple to make an official announcement of the new AirPods 2. It may have waterproofing just like how the latest iPhones starting from the iPhone X has. Another feature that could make it to the AirPods 2 is wireless charging capability.
