If you’re someone like me, most of the time, I don’t pick up calls from a number I don’t recognised unless I am expecting a call from someone or a job that I applied for, but if you’re not one on of my saved numbers, try emailing me instead.

But some of us don’t answer calls because of anxiety and trust me, phone calls stresses me out. But now there may be a way for you to not get so anxious and to find out who is calling or why they’re calling.

Google just announced a new feature for its Phone app called Verified Call. The app helps reveal who’s behind an unknown number and why they’re calling which could help decrease some of that stress and anxiety. Or it might make it worse depending on your situation.

So the Verified Calls feature will show the caller’s name, company logo, reason for calling and a verification symbol indicating the participating business has been authenticated by Google.

Google product manager Gal Vered assured that the company doesn’t collect or store any personally identifiable information after verification. Verified Calls had been in pilot version for a few months, with early results indicating that it improved the likelihood of someone answering a call.

“Businesses often rely on phone calls to reach out to new customers and serve existing ones. But here’s the hang-up: customers often don’t answer the call if they don’t recognise the number,” he said, on the Google blog.

The technology was based on last year’s Verified SMS feature, which confirmed the identity of the business that’s texting and a study in the US and Brazil found that Verified SMS increased consumer trust in brands, significantly improving performance on metrics like likelihood to purchase, brand satisfaction and likelihood to recommend.
