Netflix Tanks At Golden Globe Awards; Wins Just 2 Out Of It’s Record 34 Nominations

The most prestigious awards in TV & Film happened this morning and it was none other than the Golden Globe Awards. This year, streaming companies really made their presence felt with its TV shows and films being nominated across the board. Netflix led the way with a total of 34 nominations this year, which is actually a record breaking number of nominations for the popular awards show. As such, one would expect that the 2020 Golden Globes would be a smashing success for Netflix.. Only, it wasn’t.

While the popular streaming service received 34 nominations, it won a grand total of just 2; Olivia Coleman’s best actress win for The Crown and Laura Dern for best supporting actress in Marriage Story in the film category. This amounts to a a mere of 6% of the awards they were in the running for. Most notably, Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, which was expected to make a big splash, absolutely tanked. The film was snubbed in each of the 5 categories it was nominated for.

In terms of how other video streaming services did, HBO Max won big in the TV categories with a total of 4 awards, with Succession and Chernobyl taking home two gongs each. Amazon Prime on the other hand, won 2 prizes for its comedy Fleabag. Apple TV+, which had been nominated for two awards for The Morning Show went home empty handed, but not before being put on blast (With Tim Cook in the audience no less) by host Ricky Gervais in his opening monologue.

Savage.

I suppose Netflix can take comfort in the fact that they got 34 nominations though i’m pretty sure that’s what tends to happen when you’re churning TV shows and films at the rate it has in the past year. It’ll be really interesting to see how the streaming giant does at the 2020 Oscars, which is set to happen on February 9th. Lets hope you get more than 2 this time eh, Netflix?
