Netflix Snaps Up Prince Harry & Meghan Markle; Former Royals Will Reportedly Earn US$150 Million

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made headlines 8 months ago when they announced to the world that they would be stepping down from their official royal duties. At the time, given the constant media criticism that Markle received, it seemed like the sensible thing to do.

Having called it quits as royals, there was talk about the couple planning for the next phase of their lives in Hollywood, and sure enough, they’ve just signed a multiyear production deal with Netflix. Given the fact that the couple have been living in LA for the last 5 months or so, the announcement doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

Not only will they be trying their hand at documentaries, but they’ll also be producing feature films, scripted shows and children’s series exclusively for Netflix. In a statement to the New York Times, they said: “Our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope. As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us.”

Given Markle’s history as a former actor, you’d think that she’s slated to appear in at least one of her own productions but believe it or not, the former actress has absolutely no plans to return to acting. That being said though, both she and her husband could make appearances in the documentaries they produce.

No news yet on just how much bank the couple will be making but it is reported that they will earn US$150 million. Given Netflix track record of pretty much throwing money at big names, this is hardly surprising. Remember when the company signed Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss? Yeah that deal was reportedly worth US$200 million.

It’ll be interesting to see the kind of productions that the couple come up with. Two years ago, Netflix made a deal with Michelle and Barack Obama and their documentary ended up winning an Oscar, so perhaps something similar can happen with this deal.
