Whilst other brands were busy churning out smartphones like there’s no tomorrow (Perhaps in Huawei’s case, there IS no tomorrow), Vivo has been quietly biding its time in the shadows. Its last flagship release, the value for money V15 Pro, came out back in February and 4 months in the smartphone world is the equivalent of 4 years in the real world.
They say good things come to those who wait and at MWC today, they’ve proven the old adage to be true. It looks like the the company has been working hard on developing cutting edge innovations as part of its new strategy to deliver a richer mobile experience in the 5G era.
One of those innovations solves a problem we’ve all had for years: The long wait to charge our phones. With most releases focusing on the specs of a device, Vivo seems to be the only one coming up with features people actually need in a real world setting. Think of them as that one employee that comes up with solutions rather than problems.
We got a first hand glimpse at the breakthrough technology at MWC Shanghai today and boy, does it look good. Coined as Super FlashCharge 120W, it features a new charge pump technology with a deeply customizable type-C data cable and travel charger. Prior to the event, Vivo claimed it would only take 5 minutes to charge a 4000mAh battery from 0-50%, with a full charge taking 13 minutes and they weren’t mucking about; I got to witness their upcoming IQOO 5G smartphone go from 16% to 50% faster than drake goes 0-100— Real quick.
With the advent of 5G upon us, it’s features like this with real world applications that really gets me excited. I very much look forward to coming home, plugging my phone in, taking a dump and heading out refreshed in more ways than one. However, it’s worth noting that the device did heat up quite a bit. That’s understandable though, given that the 120W charging technology is still in its development phase. We probably won’t see a ready for consumer version for another year or so.
Regardless, there’s no denying that while this may not have been the breakthrough in technology that we want, it’s the breakthrough in technology that we sure as heck need.
