Our options when it comes to music streaming platforms has is now broader than ever. At long last, Google has brought it’s entry into the music streaming business, YouTube Music, to Malaysia. It seems like the trend for 2019 is getting that subscription numbers up, just ask Apple. Google’s introduction of their music streaming service in Malaysia is going see it competing against Spotify for the audio real estate of Malaysians.

Let’s get to the question on everyone’s mind then, shall we? Just how much is a YouTube Music subscription going to cost you?

For contextual purposes, Spotify Malaysia is currently charging RM14.90 for a Spotify Premium account, while a family plan will put you back RM22.40 a month for 5 accounts. YouTube Music is also priced at RM14.90 a month + a one month free trial for first time users. It’s family plan however is 50 sen more expensive at RM22.90.

It is definitely worth noting that the subscription will cost you more (RM19.90 a month) if you subscribe through Apple iTunes, so do yourself a favour and subscribe via a web browser to enjoy the low fees.

So what exactly are the perks of signing up for a paid account? For one, you get ad-free music both in audio AND video formats as well as the ability to download tracks for offline listening. YouTube Music with a free account comes with an annoying feature where music is cut off once you leave the app, so, it’s paid or nothing for me.

With YouTube Premium launching recently, you might want to consider actually subscribing for that instead if you’re taking a serious look at YouTube Music. YouTube Premium will set you back RM17.90 a month, which is a mere additional RM3. What does this extra RM3 get you?
