Its not surprising to see the rise in online scam cases in Malaysia with the advent of smartphones, affordable internet and a lack of awareness, many individuals have become victim to this new form of crime. Home Affairs Ministry recorded a total of 3,533 online fraud cases involving RM186 million losses from January to August this year, Deputy Minister Datuk Mohd Azis Jamman said the total amount of losses included RM79.4 million involving 1,612 Macau Scam cases.
Macau Scam is the most common type of scam which preys on victims fear for the authority. The bad actors pose as either bank agents or police officers, they then make phone calls ( from acquired database) informing the receiver that a stolen vehicle under their name was used in a fatal motor accident. In order to close the case, they will either need to travel to another state police station or chose to bank in a certain amount to settle the case. While some are capable enough to verify if the call is genuine, it is obvious the culprits are going by sheer mass approach hoping there will be some who will just fall for the scam. The tactic is just one of many being used today.
Datuk Aziz assures the Home Affairs Ministry is taking a serious look at online fraud cases covering various categories from telephone and internet fraud, Love Scam, non-existent loans and Macau Scam which are growing in numbers.
More efforts are needed to curb such crimes including increasing law enforcement, operations, arrests and prosecution of those involved in fraudulent activities.
