Google employees are outraged due to a manifesto that was written by a senior engineer that criticises the company’s efforts to improve workforce diversity. The ten-page treatise titles “Google’s Ideological Echo Chamber”, argues that women are underrepresented in tech.
However, this is not due to bias and discrimination, but rather the biological difference between men and women. The document was first reported by Motherboard and went viral inside the company after being posted on an internal network.
The controversy comes as Silicon Valley companies grapple with how to increase workforce diversity in an industry dominated by white men. Google, Facebook, Microsoft and other tech companies now regularly release diversity reports, highlighting the low percentages of women and minority employees, realising how few of them are moving up the management chain.
Meanwhile, Google is being sued by the US Labor Department due to the accusation that the company is systematically paying its female employees less than it pays men – which have been strongly denied.
