Here it comes, Intel’s new 5th Generation Intel Core processor! Now on a 14nm process, the 5th Gen Intel Core processors aim to once again bring improved performances to the consumer, is capable of longer battery life and, of course, a better user experience. Intel is releasing 14 new processors for consumers and businesses, split into 15W and 28W processors.
This 14nm process is a die shrink of 37% from Gen 4 and will have 35% more transistors, which Intel says translates to 22% better 3D graphics, a maximum of 50% faster video conversion, improves productivity by no more than 4%, and (very important for mobiles or laptops) up to 1.5 hour increase to battery life. These level ups are a boon to the mobile device user, since you can now enjoy more movies on the go, maybe do video conversions on your 2-in-1s faster, and get better framerates on your favourite mobile game.
Gen 5 of the Intel Core family is set to boost not only ye standard notebooks, but also the highly popular 2-in-1s, Chromebooks, or the All-in-One desktops and mini PCs. Based on the “Broadwell” microarchitecture, Intel expects to be able to support a wide variety of devices.
Speaking of devices, Intel has already begun shipping its “Cherry Tail” 14nm processor tablets to its device manufacturers. This new SoC (System on a Chip) is 64-bit ready with Intel Gen 8-LP graphics, and should have excellent performance on top of a healthy battery life for mainstream tablets. What’s great here is that it will be able to support LTE-Advance, which means Cat-6 speeds (300Mbps) and carrier aggregation, with the Intel XMM 726x platform. This category of products should reach the consumer market within the first half of 2015.
Desktop users aren’t left out, because right after Broadwell should be Skylake, the platform for high-end/gaming laptops and desktop PCs. If you want to know more of the technical details, visit www.intel.com.
