Better Late Than Never As Intel Hops Into 5G

MWC happens to be a hotbed with activity from telecommunication and mobile device manufacturers and has often not been on the radar by the PC industry, yet today all that has changed as lines are blurring between this two. A missed decade by Intel into the massive transition that took place in mobile, sees the chip-maker looking seriously in not making that same mistake again.

Intel today announced that it’ll be partnering with telecommunication network giants to lay the groundwork for a faster, smarter and more efficient next-generation mobile connectivity 5G that offers users speeds up to 1Ghz and above .

“Billions of increasingly smart and connected devices, data-rich personalised services, and cloud applications are driving the need for smarter and more powerful networks,” said Aicha Evans, corporate vice president and general manager of the Intel Communication and Devices Group. “The transition to 5G brings communications and computing together and is a fundamental shift for the industry. It is essential to lay the foundation for future 5G networks now to make amazing experiences of the future possible.”

LG Electronics and Intel Corporation will develop and pilot 5G telematics technology for next-generation cars. Other collaborations include Nokia, Ericsson, SK Telecom and Verizon. Intel also offers platforms and industry collaborations to develop early prototype solutions that will accelerate 5G development.
