Intel Lights Up the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics

Intel breaks the Guinness World Records with 1,218 Intel Shooting Star drones during the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. The drones flew in perfect unison, forming the iconic Olympic rings and a snowboarder.

Intel’s Shooting Star drones also made history in the Winter Olympics, marking the 2018 Winter Olympics with the first-ever drone light show. The record in question was the Guinness World Records title for the “most unmanned aerial vehicles airborne simultaneously.” This record overtakes the previous record, also set by Intel in 2016 where a total of 500 drones flew simultaneously in Germany.

Aside from the opening ceremony, the drones are designed and developed with other custom animations to suit the nightly victory performances. This includes different animations from the various sports that will be played during the 2018 Winter Olympics as well as various Olympics-related logos. Natalie Cheung, general manager of Intel’s drone light show team was at the opening ceremony, and had this to say:

“The Olympics are a time when the sports and entertainment industries are buzzing with record-setting performances, so it was the perfect stage for Intel Shooting Star drones and our team to set their own kind of record.”
