Instagram Direct Messages have been around since the apps inception and it’s arguably the one thing that the app got spot on right from the start. I mean yeah, the ability to send messages on an app is pretty elementary, but you’d be surprised as to how badly done it can get. That being said, Facebook’s quest to unify messaging across all the apps it owns seems to have taken a HUGE step forward.

It looks like Instagram DMs and Facebook Messenger are all set to merge. Facebook is testing out a unified messaging experience for Facebook and Instagram and according to The Verge, some people have already got the notification that they’ll now have the ability to “chat with friends who use Facebook”.

Those “lucky” enough to get the patch will now see the paper aeroplane at the top right corner of the app, which has been a mainstay of the app for years now, replaced with the Messenger logo. The strange part about all this is the fact that the patch isn’t even ready yet! It turns out that you can’t message your Facebook friends just yet but the fact that this has happened just means that it’s coming soon.

I don’t know about you guys but I like the separation between my Instagram DMs and my Facebook messages. Heck, I’m barely ever on Facebook Messenger. That being said though, features that already come with Messenger such as being able to customise the colour of your chat bubbles and replying to messages by swiping on them will definitely be a welcome addition.

Facebook seems hell bent on unifying chats across all their platforms and eventually WhatsApp will be a part of this too, so you can expect some changes to the app in the future. What do you guys think of the direction Facebook has planned for chats?
