Latest from the land that gave the world Kamasutra, India has decided to ban porn claiming the online sites cause abusive sex among its viewers. Sex violence in India has been lately brought into the media limelight with some brutal rape acts becoming global news. Although there were no correlation to the internet or porn in particular for sex violence in the country, the call to ban online porn comes as rather bemusing affair. In fact the ban comes about as the case is even being debated in the Supreme Court on the banning of these sites, during the hearing the Chief Justice refused to pass an interim order to ban the websites citing constitution and rights to personal liberty.

India’s Department of Telecommunications similar to our countries MCMC, undertakes responsibility on internet guidelines, they have now ordered ISP’s to block 857 sites that contain adult and pornographic contents. Effectiveness is a question mark here, as only the URL’s are banned, users can circumvent this through proxies or VPN.

The ban has caused fury among both sides of the community with some declaring it as a violation of personal liberty while certain groups welcome the decision by the government.
