Trust IKEA to make smart brand collaborations. Having already teamed up with the likes of Virgil Abloh, the Swedish furniture company is now teaming up with ASUS Republic of Gaming (ROG) division in an effort to make “affordable gaming furniture accessories” in a product line thats rumoured to consist of around 30 products.
This isn’t the first time the brand has dabbled in tech, with the introduction of its smart home products and AR furniture app last year turning out to be a real statement of intent from the company.
IKEA’s Product Development Center in Shanghai is slated to be developing this new “gaming range” and according to the company, the groundwork has already been done. Its designers have already held workshops with ROG designers, along with professional gamers and “gaming lovers” in order to get the functionality of the furniture just right.
All that being said though, we’re still in the dark as to the exact nature of the furniture being produced by the two powerhouses. All signs point to it likely being a line of gaming desks and chairs though.
Furniture made with gaming in mind almost always look way too tacky and tend to stick out like a sore thumb in a room. Given IKEA’s track record of producing furniture that blends well in any given room, it’ll be interesting to see the approach they take here. Surely gaming themed furniture that actually looks good will sell, right?
The range is set to first launch in China in February 2021, followed by a global release in October 2021.
