How to Safely Charge Your Phone Overnight

We’ve all heard the myth that if you leave your phone to charge overnight, it will ruin the phone’s battery quicker, or that it will affect the efficiency of the charger. So, is it really true?

Apparently, average smartphone batteries are designed to last about a year and a half before their capacity will naturally begin eroding. In fact, according to a report from Business Insider, the battery is more likely to decline based on how far we push out phones in everyday usage.

Kyle Wiens, head of iFixit comments that it is also not about how many times a day you plug in or unplug your device from a power source, but rather the number of times it reaches full capacity.

Meanwhile, a representative from a battery and charger accessory-maker adds: “What must be understood is that phone batteries are constantly in a state of decay. Sleeping with a phone charging overnight will make no difference in the process.”

Although, most smartphones now are designed to significantly reduce their draw current once their batteries have reached 100% capacity. So, the only thing to worry about is the temperature of the device and where you place it while charging.

It’s only normal that the smartphone will heat up substantially while it’s plugged in, so all you have to do is make sure that the device is not smothered with a pillow or blanket while you’re sleeping. As long as it doesn’t overheat, there won’t be any potential risk of it damaging the device’s internal components.
