Grab and Uber is taking their fight into Myanmar.

Grab launched the beta trial of its GrabTaxi service in Yangon yesterday, allowing users and drivers to  sign up by downloading the Grab app from Google Play and the App Store. According to Reuters, Uber also issued a statement, noting “very pleased with the progress we have made toward a partnership with the government in Yangon and look forward to introducing our ridesharing technology in the country very soon.”

While the trial is limited, Grab will notify users if they are shortlisted for the beta trial. Currently, Grab is working with a small group of taxi drivers. The beta trial will scale up gradually to allow Grab to test and improve the GrabTaxi service in Yangon, based on driver and passenger feedback.

“As a start, we will focus on improving driver service and safety standards for taxis in Yangon. We have deep experience in using data analytics to better match taxi drivers to passengers, and have robust driver screening and training processes to ensure that our driver partners provide a safe and quality service,” said Cheryl Goh, Group Vice President of Marketing, Grab.

Grab currently operates in six Southeast Asian countries – Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. It has a driver base of more than 710,000 drivers across 39 cities, with over 36 million downloads of the Grab app.

According to Tech Crunch, Uber has met with government officials in January, according to local media reports, but there’s no immediate timeline for a launch.

So far the market in Myanmar has been filled by local startups like Hello Cabs and Oway Group. While the momentum hasn’t really taken off, it seems that Grab and Uber is looking to jump on this opportunity to open up the market.
