Google has suspended business with Huawei that includes the transfer of hardware, software and other technical services. This will however exclude those which are publically available via open source licensing. What this means, is that holders of current Huawei smartphones will still be able to use and download app updates from Google.

We are complying with the order and reviewing the implications,” A spokesperson for Google said, according to Reuters.

“For users of our services, Google Play and the security protections from Google Play Protect will continue to function on existing Huawei devices,” the spokesperson said, without giving further details.

This suspension however, would hurt Huawei’s business and presence outside of China. Most Google apps are already banned in China and have replacements from Tencent and other softwares in the country. Future versions of Huawei smartphones that run on Android will lose access to popular Google services such as Google Play Store, Gmail and YouTube.

Google will still provide access to the version of Android OS available through the open source license, known as Android Open Source Project (AOSP). However, technical support and collaboration with their propietary apps and services will stop.

In preparation  of this, Huawei has said it has spent the last few years preparing a contingency plan. They developed their own technology just in case it is blocked from Android. Some of this technology is already in products sold in China, the company said. Pretty good future telling there Huawei.

This could spell trouble for the Chinese tech company, as this would affect users worldwide. No Google apps on a device in this day and age? Practically impossible. The impact it has on markets outside of China still remains to be seen. But it’s looking like getting a Huawei device after today, doesn’t seem worth it.
