It looks like Google’s Yeti streaming service is finally ready for show. Google announced today Project Stream, a service that allows you to play high-end games on your Google Chrome internet browser. This experimental technology can stream a AAA game to your browser with minimal lag and no visual loss. The first game to support this platform will be Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which launches on Friday.

The company has partnered with Ubisoft to prepare the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for streaming, straight from your laptop or desktop. It will be interesting to see how this goes, seeing as low input latency is crucial to video games.
There are limited spaces available for Project Stream, but if you’re interested in participating, you can apply here. Google is looking for users with download speeds of 25 megabits per second. It also requires that you be 17 years or older and live in the U.S. to participate (other requirements can be found on the help center). You’ll get to start testing on this service on Friday, the same day when Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launches.
The concept of video game streaming isn’t new. NVIDIA has done so with GeForce Now, as well as Sony with PlayStation Now. However, these services typically required specific hardware and weren’t particularly accessible. With Project Stream, you’ll need a free Chrome browser on your computer and a decent connection.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launches on 5th October 2018. Project Stream testing begins on the same day.
