Google uses an insane amount of energy to drive all its data centres and office across the globe, but the company is also very conscious about its consumption. So, a few years back the search giant made a collective pact to use as much renewable energy as possible. In 2017, the company first reached its 100% renewable energy use matching its annual electricity use. This was then again achieved in 2018, a remarkable feat given the magnitude of the company and its yearly expansion.
The achievement will go onto record as the first tech company of this size to make it two years running with zero wastage. Google recognises climate change and addresses the need by using more renewal energy as opposed to no-renewal ones. This was made possible by deciding to first to use as little energy as possible, operating offices and facilities sustainably, with a strong focus on data centers. Thanks to advances in artificial intelligence and chip design, data centers are now seven times more energy efficient today than they were five years ago.
Its latest Environmental Report shows that computing using centralised cloud services is up to 85% more efficient than using on-premises servers, a welcome news for users and the planet.
