(Game Review) Only The Hardcore Can Survive Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled

The PlayStation’s original is finally back and is making waves across the gaming world with the cross-platform remake of his first three games. The N Sane Trilogy was released for consoles and PCs back in 2017, and was made by Vicarious Visions, instead of the original developers Naughty Dog. After the remake, it was only a matter of time before they set to remake Crash Team Racing.

Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled is a full remake of the 1999 Crash Bandicoot kart racer. Originally made as the answer to having a Mario Kart-like game for the PlayStation 1, this new remake is available for PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One. Nitro Fueled not only remakes the original 1999 in glorious high definition and with the new 3D models made in the N Sane Trilogy, there are also race tracks, karts, and characters from the sequels, 2003’s Crash Nitro Kart and 2004’s Crash Tag Team Racing.

Gameplay Mechanics

So, what makes a kart racer? Typically having frantic 3 lap races, drifting, and a bunch of items. The original Crash Team Racing brought a bunch of new elements to the kart racer genre, one of them being the powersliding mechanic. Unlike Mario Kart, just drifting won’t get you a mini-turbo straight away. In CTR, there is an extra meter next to the speedometer, which fills up as you drift. Once you start to drift, press the powerslide button as the meter is filling up, and you’ll get a quick burst of speed. You can do it 3 times a row to get ahead of the competition.

Different Modes To Get Into!

There are a number of modes for the game, with the Adventure mode being the main attraction. In this mode, you get to go through a whole campaign, beating each race, fighting bosses, it is the perfect way to get yourself accustomed to the game. Besides that, there are the usual local multiplayer modes, like grand prix and battle mode, which are playable locally for up to 4 players, and up to 8 players if you’re playing online.

The game does borrow one modern convention that a lot of battle royales and fighting games have been implementing, that being seasons. For a limited time, the game will offer special rewards up for grabs for seasoned players. This includes special karts, costumes, and characters. One of the biggest rewards they’re offering in an upcoming season is with Spyro The Dragon being playable in the coming future.

Final Verdict

To sum it all up, Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled is a must-have kart racer, especially if you don’t have Mario Kart on the system you’re playing on. It definitely is the most skill-based of the kart racers, especially with the whole power-sliding mechanic and pretty tough AI opponents.

In fact, even normal mode can be pretty hard if you don’t have the mechanics locked down. It definitely doesn’t have the pick up and play, friendliness that Mario Kart 8 or even Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed has, but it definitely becomes a thrill once you fully understand and master the game.
