Different from the pricey Oculus Rift, Facebook is introducing an affordable Oculus for those interested in VR. The company announces that its first standalone headset is now available in 23 countries. Unfortunately, Malaysia does not fall under the first few countries to receive the product.
Oculus Go uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 chip, paired with a 5.5” 2560 x 1440 WQHD fast-switch LCD screen running at 60Hz or 72Hz. Additionally, the headset has a battery life of up to 2 hours for games and 2.5 hours for videos. Also included are integrated speakers and a microphone.
Since the device is binary compatible with Gear VR, Oculus Go launches with over 1,000 apps, games, and experiences. This includes the likes of Republique VR, Poker VR, Jurassic World: BLUE, and more.
Functionally, the Oculus Go works similarly to the Gear VR. Users handle a remote control for pointing, while the headset tracks a limited degree of head rotation.
The Oculus Go launches as a standalone headset. Being standalone also means that instead of requiring a Samsung smartphone via Samsung Gear VR, the device works fine on its own.
According to Facebook, Oculus Go combines the best lenses of any Oculus headset to date with built-in spatial audio and an optimized software stack. Hence, the Oculus Go provides a compelling all-in-one immersive experience where content shines.
The affordable Oculus Go sells at $199 (estimated RM 783). Those interested can buy the Oculus Go from Oculus’ website.
