According to founder Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook has officially changed its name to Meta. The planning for the name change began in 2019 as the company wanted to give people a clearer identity of the name that had more than one product.
The name Meta alludes to Facebook’s journey, as the metaverse is the next evolution of social technology, allowing people to share immersive experiences with one another in a virtual setting.
“Right now, our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t possibly represent everything that we’re doing today, let alone in the future. Over time, I hope that we are seen as a metaverse company, and I want to anchor our work and identity on what we’re building toward.”-Mark Zuckerberg, 2021
We chose the term “meta” because it can also mean “beyond.” This next chapter is a future created by all of us that will take us beyond what digital connectivity allows us to do today — beyond the constraints of screens, distance limits, and even physics. Meta serves as a reminder to our company that there is always more to build.
While the name change will mark a new chapter in Facebook’s history, it also comes at a time when the company is under constant regulatory scrutiny and its founder’s leadership qualities are being questioned.
