Facebook once again finds itself embroiled in data privacy issues. This time, hackers gained access to 30 million users’ data via an exploit in the “View As” function within Facebook itself. The privacy feature was designed so that users could view their profiles as anyone in their friend list, to determine how much to allow or block from viewing.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is currently investigating and ordered Facebook not to disclose any information regarding the case. If disclosed, it could lead to the perpetrators to cover their tracks and vanish.

Catching the culprit may prove a moot point, since they will likely have sold the information to third parties, such as telemarketers or data miners. If the information has been released into the wild, 30 million users will be left exposed.

Google recently admitted to a leak in their Google+ division, leading to its swift shutdown and closure of Facebook’s only closest competitor.
