Looks like uploading information to your brain and downloading your brain is next in the pipeline for Tesla founder and Chief Executive Elon Musk.

A Wall Street Journal report emerged stating that Elon Musk has launched a company called Neuralink – which basically works on merging the human brain with computers. The technology behind is what Musk calls the “neural lace” technology. It’s implanting tiny brain electrodes that could potentially upload and download thoughts.

Although there was no formal announcement made by Musk or the company, WSJ wrote that Neuralink was registered in California as a “medical research” company last July, and the company will reportedly be funded personally by Musk.

At current time, electrode arrays and other implants have been used in the medical field to ease effects of Parkinson’s, epilepsy, and other neurodegenerative diseases. The amount of people with these basic implants are not significant, the figure probably in the ten thousands – with complex implants even fewer. These operations are not only dangerous, but also invasive, with many potential for complications. Most patients choose these operations only as a last resort.

While its not clear what exactly Neuralink’s end game is, WSJ sources state that it probably would be similar to SpaceX and Tesla. It was also reported that in recent weeks, Neuralink has also hired leading academics in the field.
