This man really trust his car that much that he’s willing to take a nap while it drives itself. Wait, no. This man really trust other drivers around him to not crash him while his car is on autopilot. Now I’m all for self driving cars and I trust my car to do exactly as it’s programmed to do (most of the time) but I certainly do not trust other drivers around me.

Anyway, this incident happened on a rural Canadian highway where a driver set his car on autopilot then took a nap. What did he do wrong? He didn’t (well actually yes he did too) but his car did. It broke the speed limit. His own fault was trusting his car that much (and taking a nap).

So police charged the man with dangerous driving.

“The car appeared to be self-driving, travelling over 140kmh with both front seats completely reclined and occupants appeared to be asleep,” said authorities.

The 20 year old man’s car was a Tesla electric model set for autopilot, according to Canadian public broadcaster CBC. The speed limit is 110 kmh on that section of the highway, it added.

In his two-decade career, the police sergeant Darrin Turnbull told CBC that he was “speechless” and had not seen such a case- but, of course, the technology was not there.

Tesla’s autopilot mode allows cars to automatically steer, accelerate, and brake within a lane, but without human intervention is not supposed to allow trips.

The US company warns on its website that “current autopilot features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous”. So

But the president of a Canadian Tesla owners’ club, who condemned the incident, told CBC that there were videos circulating online with instructions on how to “hack” the cars’ safety systems.
