Digi Reports Strong Postpaid and Internet Growth

After recording a positive 2018 performance, Digi continues the growth streak entering FY 2019 with a strong first quarter performance attributing to better results from postpaid and data monetisation.

With service revenue growing 0.7% year-on-year to RM1,483 million, Digi sees a marginal increase fuelled mostly by its internet revenue growth from the postpaid segment. The telco closed the quarter with 11.8 million subscribers with an average revenue per user steadying at RM42.

In the quarter, Digi grew its active internet user base to 8.6 million, of which 6.6 million are 4G LTE subscribers, driving a total of 67% 4G data traffic on its network.

Digi’s CEO Albern Murty said, “We managed to improve margins and returns, with earnings driven by the strong uptake momentum of our internet and digital services offerings across our postpaid, prepaid, enterprise and new digital businesses. ”

However, the telco continues to see slide in the prepaid sector as the competitive environment coupled with consumers looking for ‘best deal’ constantly port from operator to operator. Digi has been able to mitigate the loses with its aggressive campaign for postpaid plans and converting much of its prepaid users to postpaid.

Second quarter can be expected to even much better with big ticket events taking place starting with the General Election followed by Hari Raya and FIFA World Cup, mobile and internet data usage will see a spike for at least 3 months.
