Digi was hyped to announce their quarterly progress, along with the fact that they now have 900MHz spectrum coverage. Basically, there’ll be better coverage indoors with stronger signals. Digi’s Chief Network Officer Kesavan Sivabalan announced that they have been allocated 5MHz of capacity for the 900MHz frequency spectrum, which they will be activating it in July.

Kesavan noted that one of their biggest challenge was achieving good signal retention indoors. Digi have been operating thus far at a higher band spectrum, which doesn’t allow for as much reach as they’d wish. Describing themselves as “behind the competition” due to the lack of available resources, Digi was thrilled that they now have the ability to provide more competitive choices for customers, bringing stronger indoor signal, wider network coverage and better capacity.

Along with that announcement, Digi shared that they have achieved over 85% population coverage across Malaysia. Digi has always been the weaker network compared to many of its larger rivals Maxis and Celcom. While others had strengths in speed, Digi strive to bring consistent coverage 80% of the time. As Kesavan notes, “We’ve always believed in consistency, we don’t focus on being the fastest.”

Kesavan emphasised that Digi aims to be the best network for entertainment use. As consumer interest moves increasingly into videos and games, Digi makes sure their focus is in line with consumer expectations. This is hardly surprising – in fact, earlier this month Cisco reported that Asia Pacific consumes the most in data traffic, and globally, mobile video have the highest growth, representing 78% of all mobile traffic by 2021.

Digi also announced that they now offer Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) at all 4G sites – with certain restrictions. VoLTE will allow for better call quality and faster connections. At the moment Digi’s VoLTE only supports iPhones SE and above, with iOS 10.1 and above; they also support VoLTE on selected Android devices. They will be adding compatibility for other devices on a later date. Voice-over-WiFi is also in the pipeline, with a planned announce date within the quarter.
