Sony Malaysia has revealed Chong Wan Yong as Malaysia’s National Award winner for the Sony World Photography Awards 2025. Chong’s winning photograph, “Spider-Verse,” was selected in the Motion category of the Open competition.
The image captures a group of freedivers suspended upside down beneath a boat in clear water, their silhouettes creating a mesmerising scene reminiscent of the ‘Spider-Verse,’ where human movement harmonises with aquatic life.
Chong, a diving instructor with over a decade of experience, combines her passion for the ocean and photography. She aims to inspire others to connect with and protect the underwater world through her lens.
The National & Regional Awards programme, part of the Sony World Photography Awards, aims to support local photographic communities worldwide. This year, over 419,000 images from over 200 countries were submitted to the competition.
As the National Award winner, Chong will receive Sony digital imaging equipment and will be included in the awards’ exhibition and book. The overall winners for the Student, Youth, Open, and Professional categories will be announced on April 16, 2025, with the exhibition taking place at Somerset House in London from April 17 to May 5, 2025.
